The Role of Karma in Illness & Healing

The law of cause and effect, known as Karma, plays a big role in illness and healing.  Karma is the fruits we harvest from our thoughts and actions in this life and past lives.  Our “destiny” is partly determined by the fruits of what we planted (our “good” and “harmful” thoughts and deeds), the effects of which will play out in time. Karma predetermines that a soul will be incarnated with a genetic impairment or will develop an illness later in life. It is an agreement that the soul makes before reincarnating to learn the lessons prompted by an illness, or physical or mental impairment.  The same soul might be challenged in another lifetime with poverty or prejudice. There are many lessons to be learned over the course of many lifetimes, and illness is a means for learning. If it is in the highest interest of a person’s soul to be healed in a given moment, they will be healed. If a person still has some karmic lessons to learn or karmic debts to pay, then their time has not yet come to be healed.

Good health is something most people highly value. If we want to maintain or attain it, here are some things to think about and some practical steps to take.

It is important to pay attention to what we create through our minds.

Healing involves much more than just the physical body.  It begins on a soul level when we decide that we want to improve our health and are willing to take necessary steps.

The first thing is to review our thoughts, feelings and actions in order to discern how these may be affecting our health. Our thoughts and actions emit vibrations that affect us and others in positive or adverse ways, hence it is important to be aware of what our mind inadvertently creates.

Illness is a red flag that alerts us to pay attention to how our choices impact our lives. Reflection can help us unravel and discover the root cause of an imbalance that is manifesting as illness.  Are we in harmony in our home life, in our relationships and with our work? What do we consume and do with our leisure time?  Do we exercise and take care of our bodies?  What shall we do to regain balance in our lives?

Illness results when our immune systems have been unduly weakened by stressors and our energy dissipates, lowering our resistance.  It is helpful to examine the ways that we let ourselves get stressed (emotionally, physically and mentally) and to know that the energy field is affected by what we ourselves produce. Beginning with the premise that we are body, mind, heart, and spirit, it is the physical body, which is the most dense, that often reflects an imbalance.

Health is about assuming responsibility for our well-being. We need to do our part, not simply hand the baton over to a medical team or group of healers in the hope that they will do it all for us.  The first step can be as simple as truly wanting to be healing. Oftentimes spontaneous remissions are prompted by this heartfelt desire.

Healing is a co-creative process that begins from within.  When we take the first step towards healing, which is making the decision to think and act in ways that are conducive to health and harmony (and doing it!) our body’s innate wisdom and ability to heal is activated.  It is like turning the mind channel to an inner Health Channel, which lets our body-mind know that we truly wish for and are ready for healing.  The positive message is sent to the tens of millions of cells in our body, energetically TURNING the LIGHT on in each one of our cells, activating a healing response.  Our body’s innate wisdom and ability to heal is set into motion.

Our sincere desire to be healed makes us more receptive to the divine blessings that come to us through the participation of people we know (friends, relatives) and those we don’t know but who have a sincere intention to help heal.

When we are young, we believe that we are owners of the truth. Over time we come to realize that we create our reality through our mind and consequent actions, and this is how Karma is created.

Buddha said:  “Everything is based on mind, is led by mind, is fashioned by mind.”  We can choose to create a healthy, harmonious and joyful reality for ourselves, other living creatures and the planet by being mindful of our thoughts.
